Hellenic Police Boost Protection After Protests Against Israel Passenger Liner

Hellenic authorities have substantially boosted protective protocols at two key ports in an attempt to keep protesters from approaching a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Recent Protests Trigger Enhanced Protection

These protective measures at the Peloponnesian ports was implemented following earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata in the past few days. Previously, passengers aboard the same vessel were blocked from going ashore and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after local residents staged a protest on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"In spite of the truce, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," stated a schoolteacher who joined the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, unarmed individuals are being fatally injured."

Tourist Encounter and Popular Opinion

From the upper deck, tourists witnessed as protesters in Kalamata yelled: "You require the authorities, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who spent the summer organizing anti-conflict rallies throughout Greece, asserted: "Israeli visitors who approve of the decisions of their government aren't accepted here."

International Background and Foreign Ties

Constantine Filis clarified: "Owing to regional nearness and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the typical Hellenic citizen is more sensitive to what is occurring in Gaza than the typical central or north European."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a complex circumstance," he added. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for most European states."

Economic and Tourism Consequences

Official data show that over 600,000 Israeli travelers came to Greece in 2024, with estimates of greater tourism this year. This significant arrival underscores the much-improved relationship between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Tactical Alliance and Regional Considerations

Regarding Hellenic administration, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to regional rival Turkey but also provides the supplementary bonus of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its relations with Israel," stated Filis. "But from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more inclusive, more balanced, more committed to demonstrate the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Protest Movement and International Response

The scale of the Greek rally initiative has clearly taken Israel aback. In recent months, the state's external affairs office warned travelers to maintain a low profile, while domestic press described Athens as a "paradise lost" due to anti-Israeli graffiti showing up on edifices in the city center.

The head official of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece shared apprehension: "Of course we're worried. The kind of discourse we're experiencing can rapidly transform into antisemitic."

Future Developments and Demands

Progressively, critics have aimed at Athens' close ties with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the termination of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO establishment that since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza has operated as a important supply station for US aircraft carriers, military jets and ships destined for Israel.

"There have been victories," stated an anti-racist coordinator. "Our central requirement, at present, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
