Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
