Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then located numerous other marked automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are presently not aware of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior political figure stated the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
